BOMB SHELTER MIAMI WAS BUILT TO TAKE DOWN COMMUNIST CUBA

The original Bomb Shelter Miami is hidden off the trails in the woods of Coral Gables. In the 1970’s this structure was a popular hangout for kids and has been covered with graffiti spray paint.

The bunker was built in the 1960’s as a part of Operation Mongoose, which was a covert operation by the CIA. The aim was to overthrow the new Communist regime of Cuba. The operation consisted of sabotage, psychological ware fare and intelligence gathering. As true for the Bay of Pigs Invasion, this was seen as another CIA failure against Fidel Castro.

At the same time, a number of Nike-Hercules missile sites were constructed throughout South Florida. The bunker was most likely an observation center whose purpose was to alert these missile defense sites from incoming attacks.

The bunker was discovered in 1968 and was already stripped of electronic and radio equipment. In the 1970’s the bunker was a hangout for young hooligans who drank alcohol and burned things. Bomb Shelter Miami eventually became covered in graffiti and is something strange and unique. It has an creepy and dark feeling to it. Maybe a ritual or sacrifice has taken place here.
